Men v North Wales Staffordshire Union Of Golf Mens Team met for their first friendly game of the season against North Wales at Newcastle-Under-Lyme Golf Club. The day started with a heavy frost and as the players and officials arrived the fairways were looking white with frost. Fortunately the sun started to peer through the clouds and helped the fairways thaw out. The day was set to be a very cloudy day with the odd shower, we didn’t expect that to mean the odd flurry of snow/hail though. Fortunately the golf, and condition of the course, was far brighter than the weather. The recent dry spell had meant that the greens were firm and the fairways were running. Credit must be given to the greens staff at Newcastle-Under-Lyme Golf Club as they had presented the golf course in very good condition for the time of year. This was a combined team of both 1st team and 2nd team players. The morning fouresomes were started by Richard Knott and Mike Amos. This game was a very tight affair throughout the match. The Staffordshire pair could not get any luck with the North Wales lads having their fair share. Unfortunately The Staffordshire pair lost ojn the 18th hole, losing 1 down. Second group out was Jenson Forrester and Jack Turner. The young pairing from Staffordshire faced an experienced pair from North Wales. Jenson and Jack battled hard over the 18 holes, eventually halving the match. Third group out was Ollie Clews and Ellis Muckley. The Staffordshire pairing were certainly not short of distance from the tee and put on a powerful display. The Staffordshire pair eventually winning 3up with 2 holes to play. Fourth pairing was Harrison Foxall and Jack Morgan. Harrison and Jack played consistently well together and won the match 2up with 1 hole to play. Final group for the morning session was Simon Farmer (1st team captain) and Ed Kennerly. Simon and Ed put in an impressive display and won their match 4up with 3 holes to play. This meant that after the morning session the score was – Staffordshire 3.5 v North Wales 1.5. A good start to the days golf. The afternoon session got underway with Jenson Forrester, our England international player. Jenson continued his good form the morning winning his match 4up with 2 holes to play. Second out was Mike Amos where things didn’t go the Staffirdshire players way again. Mike battled hard but lost 4down with 3 to play. Third match out was Jack Turner. Jack played well with good ball striking and won his match 3up with 2 holes to play. Fourth match was Richard Knott. Despite battling hard against his opponent he just could not answer all of the birdies and lost 4down with 3 holes to play. Fifth match was Ellis Muckley. Ellis continued with his powerful display off the tee and won 6up with 5 holes to play. Sixth match was Ollie Clews. This game swung back and fourth throughout the afternoon and Ollie halved the match on the last green. Seventh match was Simon Farmer. Simon fought hard against his opponent but luck wasn’t on his side, eventually losing 5down with 4 holes to play. Eighth match was Ed Kennerly. This was a tight match all the way round with Ed taking the game to the final hole. Unfortunately Ed lost on the last hole 1down. Ninth match was Harrison Foxall. Harrison put on a good display and fought hard against his opponent. Harrison went on to win 3up with 2 holes to play. Final match was Jack Morgan. Jack played well and tried to gain the upper hand on his opponent, unfortunately ending up losing 3down with 2 holes to play. The final result meaning that Staffordshire had won their opening game of the season. Staffordshire 8 v North Wales 7. Well done to players from both sides. Thankyou to North Wales for travelling the distance to play the match, which was played in a good competitive spirit. This was a good start and a confidence boost to the Staffordshire players for the upcoming season. We would like to thank Newcastle-Under-Lyme Golf Club for letting us use their course for the day. The greens staff as already mentioned for the condition of the greens and the course. We would also like to thank the officials and players from both sides and also the officials from Newcastle-Under-Lyme Golf Club for their hospitality. Also thankyou to the professional staff and also the bar and catering staff for looking after us so well. All areas of the club certainly made us feel welcome with excellent facilities. Mens Get Together at Drayton Park Golf Club Staffordshire Union Of Golf Mens Team met for their first inter team event of 2022 at Drayton Park Golf Club on Sunday 13th March. The day was a cool blustery day at Drayton Park set in the shadows of the theme park. Fortunately the golf, and condition of the course, was far brighter than the weather. The recent rain saw soft fairways and immaculate greens. Credit must be given to the greens staff at Drayton Park for producing such wonderful greens for the time of year, which were fast and very true. The day was an event to get the players back together following the winter period. The bragging rights for the day were taken by Drayton Park member Scott Cronin. Scott overcame the very challenging conditions and his local course knowledge saw him edge out the rest of the field. Well done Scott. We would like to thank Drayton Park Golf Club for letting us use their course for the day. The greens staff as already mentioned for the immaculate greens and quality of course. The professional staff especially Dan Whitby-smith, and also the bar and catering staff for looking after us so well. All areas of the club certainly made us feel welcome with excellent facilities. 1st Team v Derbyshire A great result for the first team, which now sets up the decider against Warwickshire. It was a real pleasure to play at Penn, which was in great condition and allowed the team to take full advantage of this home match.
